On Aug. 7, for the fifth year in a row, runway show Fashion First will bring together those Seattle boutiques, designers and trendsetters for a spectacular evening of fashion. This year's theme is "The Ultimate Color Tour," and will celebrate the vibrant peacock shades that are "it" for this fall.

These former industrial areas have become self-sustained neighborhoods with distinct personalities. Take South Lake Union. Ten years ago, it was only a twinkle in Paul Allen's eye, and now it has undergone a complete renaissance.

As a jewelry junkie, I'm always on the hunt for something standout. It has to be eye-catching, it must have a style of its own and I have to love it. I found it recently at a Xenia Callahan trunk show. The local designer, who sells her pieces under the name of Xenia Mara, uses vintage copper and brass chain, and found objects and gemstones to make one-of-a-kind jewelry.

The only problem with Portage Bay Cafe, the 10-year-old University District brunch
favorite, was that it could indeed be the next ice age before you got to
stick your fork into a crab Benedict. So John and Amy Gunnar took the right cue and opened the doors of
their second restaurant in South Lake Union, without changing a thing.
This is much better than a little sibling. It's an identical twin.

South Lake Union's Vida Wellness Spa just might be my favorite new spa. It scores big points for offering Ayurvedic treatments, an infrared sauna, three rooms for couples and a spacious but cozy fireplace-warmed lounge. Oh, and did I mention a great location? It's in the 200 Westlake complex, across the courtyard from the swanky Pan Pacific hotel and right upstairs from Whole Foods Market.

Putting aside his work in Bauhaus -- which I assure you I am not -- there are three excellent reasons to see elfin art-goth Peter Murphy's "Retrospective" show
at El Corazon on Friday, May 30. They are: "Love Hysteria," 1987;
"Deep," 1990; and "Cascade," 1995. It's on those three records where
you'll find most of the songs Murphy is known for -- "I'll Fall With
Your Knife," "All Night Long," "Deep Ocean, Vast Sea," "The Scarlet
Thing in You," "Cuts You Up" and others.

Last week, my mom brought home bags upon bags of tulip bulbs. She admitted that it isn't the right time to plant them, but they were on sale so she bought a bazillion of them. Spring has a way of inspiring green thumbs, and even inexperienced gardeners find themselves yearning to nurture nature.

I visit every part of the city in the course of my job, but when you
get right down to it, I spend most of my week in one of two
neighborhoods: Ballard, home of the world's only spite landmark, and South Lake Union, formerly Cascade and home to the city's least useful mode of public transportation.
Ballard is where I live and SLU is where I work, though sometimes I do
some work at home and sometimes I sleep through meetings at work.
