Ever seen a "stray" cat missing the tip of his or her left ear? That's a sign the free-roaming or feral cat has been altered, and in this neck of the woods, there's a good chance that surgery took place at the Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project (FCSNP). Since 1997, FCSNP has pursued a simple mission -- to provide free- or low-cost access to high volume spay/neuter surgery in a safe and humane environment.

I'm just back from running with my dog Renzo. We did a longish, relaxed jog down the dirt path that hugs the Burke Gilman Trail, just north of Matthews Beach. A former sled dog, Renzo is an excellent running companion.

A couple months ago, I plucked a business card for Seattle Green Dogs off the bulletin board at Top Pot Doughnuts.
I was there for, um, a cup of black coffee. I dropped the card in my
pocket, and there it lived until I discovered it a week after Earth Day
(when I had failed to join the blogging hordes with an
eco-greenie-themed message).

While Seattle's own Top Pot may be the reigning doughnut shop in town, national chain Krispy Kreme has a cultlike following around the world (there are even Krispy Kreme locations in Kuwait and Dubai), and our fair city isn't immune to their charms.

I don't know the difference between a tight end and a halfback, and I don't really care. At least, I usually don't. But Superbowl weekend has a way of making me feel like I'm missing out on something. I'm glum because there's no reason (read: excuse) for ordering and consuming a 12-foot-long, 6-meat hoagie and a party bag of Cheetos. Or is there?

Dogs are loyal, optimistic, patient ... and funny. At least, our lives with dogs are often filled with comic interludes. Happily, some very fine writers have taken the time to write it all down.

Lulu would wade through a pool of fire-breathing cats for a piece of old, dry kibble, so I had to say "sure" when my new friend offered a treat. She liked my dog, had a cookie supply in her car, was prepared to trek out and back in the middle of a busy day. I adore dog people. But I did think: If a stranger offered a cookie from their car for my kid, would I say yes?

End of the Line
Two thoughts occurred to me as I got off the number 66 bus. As soon as the coach arrived at the end of its downtown-to-Northgate express run -- the Northgate Park & Ride lot, located behind the stack of big-box stores that faces the Northgate Mall -- I thought, "Hey, this bus stops right behind the Target. I'm gonna need to remember that the next time I need cat litter/socks/utilitarian objects designed by Michael Graves."
