With a name like La Casa del Mojito, you might expect the food at this small Roosevelt neighborhood cafe to be mere ballast for the booze. But there's also an intriguing menu of Venezuelan and Cuban dishes,
making it clear La Casa del Mojito is more than a cocktail factory.
This is a neighborhood joint looking to fill bellies as it has fun.

The new India Bistro on Roosevelt
opened six months ago, and on our recent dinner visit, it was bustling
with small groups, couples and families — and lots of fresh, aromatic,
well-seasoned and spicy food.

When I was kid in the late '70s and early '80s, playtime after school was spent in the woods and ravines of my suburban Seattle neighborhood, making forts and creating imaginary worlds. If the Moonpaper Tent had been around then, I would have been all over it.

I was prepared to be bored all the way to my prenatal gills when I visited The Fish Store in Ravenna. While I've never had an aquarium of my own, I lived with my sister and my 10-year-old nephew when he caught the fish bug. They put together a tank, which, over the years featured danios, plecostomuses and Oscars -- pretty standard freshwater fish plagued by unfortunately high mortality rates that took some of the fun out of what seemed to me an already low-thrills pursuit.

The 1 1/2-year-old Greenwood store has just opened a second store in Roosevelt. In the new shop you'll find the same vintage T's and Western shirts ($6-$140), Levi's 501s ($15-$35), reconstructed denim skirts ($30-$40), sassy dresses ($75-$180) and perfectly worn cafe racer jackets ($80-$550). You'll also find tube socks, belts and plenty of black leather to finish off an outfit.

In every Seattle neighborhood, there's at least one shop that seems like it's been around forever -- a place you've driven by a thousand times, always meaning to stop in. The Herbalist in Ravenna is one of those places.

I came upon this little waxing spot by word of mouth. Melissa Avila, an aesthetician with 13 years experience at posh salons, opened up her intimate studio two years ago. Located in a funky little duplex in the Roosevelt District, Avila has a full menu of waxing services. The digs are simple but comfortable. The studio is known for the variety of waxing options offered and its friendly neighborhood vibe (her waiting room is stocked with cookies, candies, and snacks).
