Gentle Snark
This Saturday, June 21, Seattle's own Rat City Rollergirls take on The Bay Area Derby Girls at Magnuson Park. B.A.D. Girls are a formidable opponent: their team play is rock-solid, and they roll fast. Hardly surprising. After all, they hail from San Francisco -- a city built upon a foundation of rock and roll.

My friend David Williams, author of "The Street Smart Naturalist," a field guide for Seattle, loves birds and knows a lot about them. (His book provides local perspective on geese, eagles and crows. While not exactly on top of rare species lists, fascinating flyers nonetheless.) David also loves a good microbrew. So this notice is for him -- and all the other bird-watching, craft-beer-loving, tree-hugger types out there.

I'm working on a story about companion birds. In the process, I'm discovering a community of avid avianophiles that I, surrounded by tooth and claw, didn't know existed.

They're back! On March 22, the four teams that make up the Rat City
Rollergirls will continue the business they left unfinished after last
year's championship bout. Grave Danger will try to cement its alpha-dog
standing by defeating DLF -- a team they've never beaten -- and the
Throttle Rockets will take on the Sockit Wenches in hopes of getting a
winning streak going. Will Seattle survive this brutal (but
family-friendly) gladitorial event?

Lulu would wade through a pool of fire-breathing cats for a piece of old, dry kibble, so I had to say "sure" when my new friend offered a treat. She liked my dog, had a cookie supply in her car, was prepared to trek out and back in the middle of a busy day. I adore dog people. But I did think: If a stranger offered a cookie from their car for my kid, would I say yes?

Daily Find
Last week, I drove a few miles north of my comfort zone to visit Fresh, a new boutique in the new-to-me neighborhood of Wedgwood.

Seattle Style File
Once I reached a "certain age" I began to develop an aversion to shopping for clothes. Pants were tighter, blouses gapped. But it was the rear view from a three-way mirror in a brightly lit dressing room that was most shocking. Where did I get all that flesh on my back? It looked like the part of a chicken no one wanted.

At about a dozen off-leash parks in the greater Seattle area, they run, they chase, they bark, they strut, they squat, they socialize and they sniff out the opposite sex.
And you should see some of the things the dogs do, too.
Scratch the surface of any off-leash area and you'll find out these free-ranging places are as much for the human species as the canine.

Got plans for the weekend? If not, "Washington Nature Weekends," an entertaining compilation of 52 outdoor-minded possibilities, might stir your imagination and prod you into pursuing some of the state's less-obvious recreational options.
