The world of men's briefs is a limited one--you've got your solids and your solids. Sure, you can find more variety with regards to color and prints in men's bikinis and thongs, but they're, well, a little more exotic.
That's where underwear from Danial Webster Design comes in, created by local designer Danial Hellman. They fill the unspeakable void of underwear that's fun, not boring. Hellman uses colored and print fabric in his well-constructed underwear, such as red and white mini-stripes, black and white Dalmatian prints, red and black plaid, smiling white skulls on a black background, and a perky orange, tan, and white-striped fabric. The tailor and costume maker learned to work with knits from a friend. He sews up dozens of pairs a month in his living room workspace.
Hellman plans to expand to more stores and launch a Web site in the near future. For now, you'll find his fancy underpants at Pants in Belltown and the Sweatshop on Capitol Hill. The underwear is currently available in small and medium, but the stretchy knits are accommodating and large sizes will soon be available. Pairs retail for about $25.
