Tegan and Sara: Pop confessionalism you can dance to

By Neal Schindler

"Encircle me, I need to be taken down," Tegan and Sara sing on the title track of their most recent album, "The Con," which happens to be their major-label debut. You wouldn't know it, though. The Canadian sisters are still doing what they do best: tart harmonies and emotionally incisive lyrics that sometimes surprise you with their honesty.

Since the wave of confessional singer-songwriter stuff on both mainstream and indie levels in the early '90s (think Alanis Morissette and Ani DiFranco), showing vulnerability and self-knowledge isn't exactly groundbreaking in pop music made by women, but Tegan and Sara do it better than almost everybody else out there.

See them Dec. 3 at Showbox at the Market [0].
