It's a common refrain among mothers: "I love cute kids' clothes, but they grow out of them so fast!" In Seattle, budget-conscious moms in the know hit up local consignment stores to outfit their little tykes in gently worn designer duds.

The newest store to hit the scene is Le Petit Shoppe [0] near University Village [0]. Local moms Monica Fetty and Carolyn Cussac opened last November, but they recently expanded both their space and their offerings. Stocked mostly with clothing for children up to age 10, as well as maternity wear, Le Petit Shoppe also offers new clothes from lines like Toni Tierney [1], Baby Lulu and Beetlejuice.

The store is well organized by size, and it's obvious that the owners care about the quality of the clothing and shoes that they accept. On a recent visit, I spied an adorable peach sweater and legging outfit for ages 3 to 6 months from Tea Collection for $16.90, and almost-new black velvet Mary Janes from Mimi Rose for $12.90. A new cotton hand-sewn skirt for little girls in kicky vintage cotton by Hazel's Vintage Pretties ($26) was so cute I wanted one for myself.

Le Petit Shoppe also carries burp cloths and bibs from So Anna [2] ($11.90-$22.90), art from local artist Carrie Rivera ($25-$148 for a personalized painting), baby gear and some furniture and toys. Near the back is an activity-packed play area to keep kids occupied so Mom or Dad can shop in peace.
