Fishing in the Pacific Northwest and B.C.

There's good fishing to be had in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, whether you choose fly-fishing in quiet rivers and lakes, wrestling enormous salmon on a charter boat or angling off a local pier.

FISHING DESTINATIONS
Lake Roosevelt, Grand Coulee Dam
The 30-plus species of fish inhabiting these waters include walleye, rainbow trout and enormous white sturgeon, averaging 100-300 pounds but growing up to 20-feet long and 1,800 pounds.

Chelan
Lake Chelan is a very popular fishing spot, with kokanee salmon, chinook salmon, lake trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, smallmouth bass and burbot. Fish get big in these waters.

Mountain Loop
The Darrington district boasts a large number of small lakes, some of which provide excellent fishing.

Neah Bay
Saltwater fly-fishing guide services target salmon and bottom fish, and a few charter boats target halibut, lingcod, red snapper and black sea bass.

Westport
Offshore rocks and reefs are feeding grounds for salmon, bottom fish, halibut and even albacore tuna; take a charter boat to find the best spots. Westport to North Cove is popular for surf fishing.

Roseburg
The Umpqua River system is home to a dozen species of popular eating fish that range from the big chinook salmon to the tiny silver smelt.

Bend
With more than 100 mountain lakes and the Deschutes River within an hour's drive of Bend, your piscatorial pleasures will be satisfied in central Oregon.

Umpqua Highway
You can wade on in and poke around for the best fishing holes on the North Umpqua, one of the few rivers with a native summer run of steelhead.

Astoria
Sports anglers can fish for salmon in either salt- or freshwater (depending on time of year) or go after trout, bass, catfish, steelhead and sturgeon in freshwater lakes, streams and rivers.

Hood River
You can go for trout in several beautiful small mountain lakes. The other option is fishing the Hood River itself, or the Columbia.

The Wallowas
You can catch trout and steelhead in the streams that flow out of the ice-capped mountains, or bass, crappie and sturgeon in the Snake River.

Crater Lake Highway
The fish runs on the Rogue River are second in size only to the ones in the Columbia.

Ucluelet
The fall runs of chinook can yield fish up to 20 kilograms, and the town's busy charter fleet offers deep-sea fishing excursions as well as whale-watching trips.

Powell River
Saltwater fishing for chinook salmon is good year-round. Sport anglers also pursue red snapper, perch, flatfish, lingcod and rockfish.

Nelson
Kootenay Lake holds kokanee, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout, and the lake's feeder streams also provide good fishing opportunities.

Sunshine Coast
Boating and ocean fishing are popular activities around Pender Harbour, and Ruby and Sakinaw Lakes — between Madeira Park and Earls Cove — are a trout fisher's delight in season.

Vancouver
A few runs of salmon occur within city limits, and rainbow trout, kokanee and Dolly Varden inhabit the larger mountain lakes north of the city.
