Guide to yoga studios
How do many Seattleites get through the rain and gray without losing their marbles? One word: yoga. A combination of mindful breathing and conscious stretching, with a dash (or more) of spirituality, yoga continues to gain popularity. If you've never tried it, hit a studio, grab a mat and give it a shot.

Center for Yoga of Seattle
(Ravenna/Roosevelt)
Created in 1980, CYS is a globally recognized BKS Iyengar Yoga Study Center, and its founder, Richard Schachtel, is the only authorized Iyengar teacher in Seattle. (Iyengar yoga uses props, like belts and blocks, to aid the yogi in achieving positions.)
Dahn Yoga Harbor Steps
(Downtown)
Dahn teaches an holistic style of yoga that incorporates qigong principles, and its downtown location -- it's part of the Harbor Steps complex on First Avenue -- makes it a great choice for lunchtime classes on weekdays.

(Redmond)
This Redmond studio teaches the hatha and viniyoga traditions and offers special classes for pregnant women.
Planet Earth Yoga
(Fremont)
True to its name, Planet Earth espouses a holistic approach to yoga that incorporates chanting, meditation and dance (for those who desire it), keeping the practice connected to its spiritual roots.
Samadhi Yoga
(Capitol Hill)
Dancers and energetic students are attracted to Kathleen Hunt and Steve Davis' Capitol Hill studio. Hunt is a yoga teacher's teacher and conducts classes that are high-energy and athletic, with a pervasive Eastern influence incorporating chanting.
Sanctuary Spa and Yoga
(Redmond)
Most classes on the yoga schedule are conducted in a heated studio (90 degrees or above) or are Bikram-style "hot yoga," where the studio is 110 degrees. Both tend to relax muscles more quickly and aid in sweating out more of those toxins.
Santosha Yoga
(Madison Park/Madrona)
This yoga studio is located on the second floor of a quiet complex of buildings just off busy East Madison Street in Madison Valley. The sunlit space has skylights and large windows, plus a small boutique with yoga wear, props, music, books, CDs and incense.
Shakti Vinyasa Yoga
(Ballard/Crown Hill)
Lisa Black's welcoming yoga studio in Ballard offers a toasty yoga workout. Though not technically "hot yoga," the room is kept at 88 degrees to relax muscles for power Vinyasa flow yoga, the style taught there. The small boutique carries yoga apparel by Be Present, Marika, Shiva Shakti and Om Girl.
Soul Ease Holistic Yoga Spa
(Kirkland)
The holistic approach at this beautiful yoga spa accounts for the combination of wellness programs, yoga classes, acupuncture and spa treatments available.
Taj Yoga
(Ballard/Crown Hill)
Taj Yoga is located in the old Crown Hill Elementary School building. Beginning through advanced classes are offered in several techniques, including Iyengar, Vinyasa and Alexander. Theme-oriented workshops such as Back Care Basics and Yoga for Gardeners also take place regularly.
Tree House Iyengar Yoga
(Shoreline)
This Shoreline studio offers classes ranging from "gentle" and "Girl Power" to the ominous-sounding "Level II" (yes, we realize it doesn't really sound ominous at all). There are also classes for kids and pregnant women, and workshops on themes such as surviving the holiday season, yoga-style.
The Yoga Barn
(Issaquah)
Is it really in a barn? No, not exactly. What you need to know about Issaquah's Yoga Barn is that it offers a wide range of classes, including Vinyasa, prenatal and beginning, and sponsors both workshops and retreats for those who wish to take their practice to the proverbial next level.
Yoga on Beacon
(Beacon Hill)
This neighborhood yoga studio is intimate and friendly, with warm corkwood flooring, filtered sunlight and a sense of community and camaraderie. There are a variety of classes, and some are Iyengar-influenced, using props to accommodate individuals.
The Yoga Studio in Magnolia
(Magnolia/Interbay)
Opened in 2001, the Yoga Studio prides itself on being a "green" enterprise. It uses nontoxic laundry soap, bamboo flooring, soy candles and eco-friendly yoga mats. In addition to beginning and more advanced courses, there are classes for pregnant women and for seniors, too.
Yoga Tree
(Fremont)
Located in Fremont, this yoga studio is known for its well-educated staff and its immersions -- intensive sessions for committed students who want to gain insight and focus with a daily practice.
