Aug. 3, 2004 Short hikes in the North Cascades
These hikes were put together specifically for all those lovers of the Northwest outdoors who savor the nature and beauty of this area but who, for whatever reason, must limit their time or energy to hours at the least, or full days at the most. Offered here are hikes of 2.5 miles or less.Rainy Lake (North Cascades Highway)
At the end of a paved mile-long trail through lovely subalpine forest, find a perfect mountain lake (4,800 feet) with waterfalls from a glacier. Bathing Rocks (Snoqualmie Pass) Walk through old forest, along a pretty creek and to a basking place where children and adults alike shout and play among eroded chutes in polished rock. Esmeralda Basin (Cle Elum) Start with a rock-shredded waterfall, and then hike into flower meadows that offer fresh bouquets for each new week in summer. Lake Twentytwo (Granite Falls) Enjoy the beauty of busy little waterfalls and follow short paths through pools and giant cedar trees. Skyline Divide (Bellingham) A two-mile hike up this trail rewards you with a tremendous panorama of Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan and Excelsior Ridge. |
