Trail description: Many seasoned trail runners go to Discovery Park for its convenience and beauty. With 534 acres, more than 7 miles of trails, forest, saltwater beaches, a lighthouse, and spectacular views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier, it is an ideal urban getaway.

This run can be shorter or longer depending on how many circuits you make on the basic Loop Trail and whether you add excursions to the West Point Lighthouse or other side trails.

To begin, head west out of the south parking lot on the Loop Trail. You see your first view of the Olympics when the trail turns right after passing the restrooms. Run along the top of the bluff here.

On your first trip through the park, go past the sign for the South Beach Trail and continue past the military housing on Dakota Street. The Loop Trail continues through the woods and is marked the entire way. This trail passes the visitor center and takes you back to the south parking lot. This loop is about 2.8 miles.

On the second trip along the Loop Trail, you may wish to turn left onto the South Beach Trail. This will take you down some stairs, past a beautiful view of Mount Rainier, and then to a sidewalk leading down to the beach 300 feet below the bluff. From here you will see another trail that runs to the lighthouse and past a drinking fountain.

From the lighthouse, head north on the North Beach Trail. Near the end of the beach there is a sign in the woods for the North Bluff Trail. Take that trail back inland to the Loop Trail, which leads back to your car. This second loop is about 5 miles.

Directions: From downtown Seattle, follow Elliot Avenue north along the waterfront. It becomes 15th Avenue. Continue to the West Dravus Street exit and turn left at the stop sign. Turn right onto 20th Avenue West, which becomes Gilman Avenue West, then West Government Way, and follow the signs to the park entrance.
