Best urban trail runs
Put your feet on the soft, forgiving dirt instead of concrete; drink in the scents of the evergreen forest and hear the chatter of birds and the babble of brooks. Trail running in the Northwest provides a better workout for the feet, legs and buttock muscles than even the ultimate StairMaster can muster.

Many seasoned trail runners go to Discovery Park for its convenience and beauty. With 534 acres and more than seven miles of trails, it is an ideal urban getaway.

Bridle Trails State Park (Bellevue)
In the middle of the busy Eastside is this 482-acre, second-growth forest park crisscrossed with more than 28 miles of trail.

Redmond Watershed and Puget Powerline Trails (Redmond)
The Redmond Watershed Trail is a great run with gently rolling hills, a well-maintained trail, directions at each intersection and wildlife.

Saint Edward State Park (Kenmore)
Saint Edward State Park offers more than seven-miles of meandering forest and waterfront trail, which can be combined to create a scenic and challenging workout.

Tiger Mountain (Washington Cascades)
There are many trails to explore here. The best strategy is to peruse the signboard at the trailhead and pick one that suits your mood.

Tolt Pipeline (Bothell)
This is a great place to develop your hill-running muscles without having to worry about the tricky footing on mountain trails.
