Kirsten Anderson's Belltown gallery takes this category for the third consecutive year. Seattle's epicenter of "pop surrealism and underground contemporary art" features works that gleefully cross the line between fine art and high kitsch, with monthly shows by such countercultural stars as Audrey Kawasaki, Tim Biskup, Charles Burns, Lori Earley, Mark Ryden, Shag and Mark Mothersbaugh. Roq la Rue is fully invested in the local art scene -- most of the group shows feature local talent as well as international -- and its gallery openings are real events, more akin to rock shows.
