For two decades, this women-owned-and-operated lesbian bar has been one of Capitol Hill's bedrock establishments, as much a part of the neighborhood's character as the dance steps on Broadway. The bar itself is a humble neighborhood joint -- brick-red walls hung with local art, a pool table, cold beer, a chow menu of burgers and pizzas -- but the Wildrose crowd, a mix of "sexy women, talented women, open-minded women, free thinkers and drag kings," makes the bar an indispensable part of the Hill. Besides, Wildrose hosts cheap-taco nights, "Guitar Hero II" smackdowns and the occasional wet T-shirt contest. Civilizations have been built on less.
