Located in a decidedly unglamorous storage space in South Lake Union, Kapow! is the very embodiment of an independent coffeehouse, from its choice of beans -- they use Dillanos, a roaster based in Sumner, Wash., that offers Fair Trade Certified coffees -- to its unusual menu items, which range from breakfast burritos to Pop-Tarts. The staff knows most of its regulars (who voted enthusiastically -- and often) by name, and they make good conversation while they foam up one of the strongest and tastiest lattes in town.
