Little Kids, Big City
Back in the 1950s -- or sometime in a past that probably never existed -- Mrs. Johnson would invite all the neighborhood moms and kids over, and she'd serve cake and coffee and the kids would go off and play. But Mrs. Johnson isn't around anymore, if she was ever around to begin with. So modern moms might head to Playmatters in Greenwood/Phinney.

Little Kids, Big City
Last week I was talking with some local indie business people about the need for a space where parents can work and network with their kiddos in tow -- something like a playground or a cafe that was both kid- and parent-friendly. So this morning I was pleased when I received word that just such a spot is slated to open this weekend.
Playmatters, which will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday on Phinney Ridge, is conceived as a place where parents and other caregivers can network while their children ages birth through five can safely play.

Pet Dish
The Seattle Times story on Sunday about icanhascheezburger.com
is the first I've heard of the Seattle-based Web site that reportedly
"achieved cult status" by posting cat photos with brain-bending
captions in a sort of baby-talk/text-message language known as
lolspeak, or, according to a fascinating Lolcat entry on Wikipedia, "Kitty Pidgin."

Sure puppies and kitties are great, but it's the geriatric dogs and
cats that really get to me. With their grey muzzles, cloudy eyes,
random lumps and slow moves, these venerable animals are snoring
monuments of loyalty and companionship. But not everyone loves a senior
quadruped, and old dogs and cats all too often find themselves in
shelters without a fawning public.

Community centers in several local neighborhoods offer places for parents to turn their children loose indoors a few hours a day so they can expend a lot of energy without mom or dad spending a lot of money.

Daily Find
At Urban Kids Play on Queen Anne, a wonderful transformation takes place every second Tuesday of the month. The display tables are wheeled away, and the vibrant children's boutique becomes a yoga studio for little ones looking to stretch their arms heavenward and salute the sun.
