Keeping a polished, well-groomed look in today's economy is a tricky proposition. With all the belt-tightening, what we once considered essential elements of daily life are quickly being crossed off the list.

If your list looks anything like mine, along with the $4 lattes it also includes manicures and pedicures. Still, we want to look and feel pretty, especially when it comes to our very visible hands.

Whether you're keeping up appearances or just want a little pampering without too much guilt, Karri Patton is ready to help.

Patton, founder and sole operator of Studio Karri L, a boutique nail spa located in the heart of Madison Park, recently lowered prices on her popular ("Evening Magazine" 2008 Best of Western Washington) manicure and pedicure treatments. Now, a 60-minute pedicure is $40 (previously $60), and a 30-minute manicure costs $20 (previously $40).

Better yet, Patton practices her art without chemical additives or harsh smells associated with most nail salons.

Patton, who created her studio in 2000, describes herself as Seattle's only natural, sustainable nail care expert, which is also a find for eco- and health-conscious consumers.

"When clients ask what I mean by natural nails, my answer is that in addition to using "three-free" polish (toluene, formaldehyde, and DBP, the three worst ingredients in nail polish), my flooring is made from partly recycled rubber, the paint is low VOC, and all the lotions I use are free from parabens and synthetic fragrances."

Entering the soothing elegance of the warmly lit, intimate spa-like space, with a stylish blend of earth and ocean tones, will instantly dissolve even the most frazzled of nerves. Describing the décor as a reflection of her personal style, Patton says it's meant to induce relaxation.

"I'm always seeking Zen, and I want everything to be very nurturing and calming."

Opting for a pedicure, I sat in a well-proportioned wicker armchair, cradled by plump cushions. My long-suffering feet began soaking in a hefty earthenware bowl for a customized essential-oil footbath.

"I decide what to use for each client based on their energy"," explains Patton, who purchases her supply from Seattle's own Dandelion Botanicals. "If someone is really rushed or they have a cold, I'll put together a blend to help balance them out." For me it was a touch of organic sweet orange and thyme, given the gray cold outside.

After about 15 minutes, Patton suggested I "engage my core" before hoisting myself onto a cushy massage table set up like a recliner. Sinking into a plush nest of pillows was a welcome change from sitting in upright chairs at other salons.

Patton has a gentle touch that infuses everything she does, from the "proper nail trimming" to an expert reflexology massage of my lower legs and feet. She's also attuned to what her clients need, so nap or whip out your BlackBerry; it's your time, says Patton.

Even if weekly or even monthly appointments are a financial no-go, Patton suggests seasonal visits, which have additional health benefits. "If you don't have to maintain a perfectly groomed look, I recommend people come once a quarter. I'll still do a nice, deep treatment, look out for any kind of nail issues, such as fungus, and talk with you on how to take care of your nails in between treatments."

An hour later, my peds were perfectly groomed and polished. I felt pretty, relaxed and refreshed and ready to rewrite my essentials list.
