Bikini maven Cristina Silva helps you confidently suit up for summer

We enjoy everything about this time of year -- except shopping for a new swimsuit. So we turned to Cristina Silva, owner of Fremont bikini boutique Tininha's, for advice (and a little hand-holding) about choosing a suit that accentuates the positive.
SW: A bathing suit may be the most daunting purchase a woman makes. What's your advice for taking the fear and loathing out of the deal?
CS: I understand that shopping for bathing suits can be intimidating. I've noticed some women get obsessed about getting thin quickly before they wear their suit.
To feel more confident, get yourself a good bikini wax before you go shopping and bring a friend along. A second opinion from someone you trust is always a welcome thing.
My best advice is, don't hurry. Enjoy the moment and give yourself time to try on several styles. It's easy to be hard on yourself when trying a suit on, but the best way to deal with it is to remember that life is short. The sun is out and you should enjoy it!
SW: So we're waxed, relaxed and ready to work the racks. How do you know what will look good on you? Is there a rule about patterns versus solids?
CS: You want a style that is flattering to your body type because the shape of the suit can make all the difference; and you're looking for something that highlights your best features.
If you have short legs, stay away from boy shorts; go for low-cut bottoms instead, which will elongate your torso.
If you
want to cover your tummy, try a tankini or one-piece and remember to avoid
high-cut bottoms. I think that most of the time, one-pieces are more slimming
than tankinis.
For larger hips, look for bottoms that are thick on the sides as they won't cut
in.
For smaller cup sizes, try the nonadjustable halter top styles because they will give you a push-up look, plus the illusion of a fuller bustline.
Bathing suit bottoms with less coverage, like a Brazilian or European cut, can work for flatter butts. They will give you an extra lift.
There are no strict rules for patterns or solids -- just go for what makes you smile and feels pretty.
SW: What are your top three tips for buying a great bathing suit?
Feel the fabric before trying it on. A suit made of good Lycra will feel thick and stretchy -- that makes it last longer and gives a more comfortable fit.
Second, know what you are looking for in a swimsuit before you start trying them on. Think about what coverage you'd like, colors that you are drawn to, and what size. These things will save you time and frustration in the fitting room.
And third, ask for help. If the store you are
shopping at provides a free private consultation, take advantage of it. Getting
tips from a professional is always a plus.
Just get something that you really love and will last, even if that means you're
going to pay little extra -- it's worth it in the end.
SW: What's hot at Tininha's right now?
CS: There is a particular style that has been undoubtedly our best seller this season. It's a two-piece suit by Lenny from Brazil, with loops on the top and bottom that allow you to have either full or skimpy coverage. It's like having two bikinis in one.
