More info:

Ballard's newest boutique, Asher Anson, has many things going for it -- not the least of which is its location. It's situated in the old Ben and Jerry's space, smack dab in the middle of Market Street, the perfect spot from which to lure style-conscious Ballardites on their way to a cupcake, coffee or a movie.

Open since late August, Asher Anson is run by longtime friends Matt Lawrence and Jerry Morris, a couple of laid-back guys who share a love of fashion. While their initial concept for Asher Anson was to sell men's clothes only, they quickly realized that the way to a man's closet is through a woman -- whether she's a close friend, a girlfriend or a wife -- so they now sell women's clothes, too.

Lawrence and Morris have stocked their shop with casual clothes for young professionals who have a relaxed attitude about fashion but like to look good. Denim for both men and women takes center stage, with a good selection from FiveFour, Joe's Jeans and Genetic Denim ($158-$220). The rest of the store is full of tops, sweaters and shoes that pair well with jeans.

Men will find plaid flannel shirts from French Connection ($98), jackets from Joe's Jeans ($196) and reproduction vintage tees from Altru ($32). Boots, sneakers and deck shoes from Frye complete the outfit and start at $98.

On the women's side, I was immediately drawn to a soft heathered-grey cotton sweatshirt with chartreuse silk elbow patches ($84) by Zooey, whose cotton tops with touches of silk range in price from $70 to $84.

Asher Anson has a great selection of accessories, as well, such as wool fedoras for women from Christy's Crown Series (from $49) and jewelry from Erin Jane and Rachel Eva ($25-$150).

The shop is comfortable and doesn't feel cluttered or overstocked. The guys pipe mellow music through the speakers, creating a casual environment for some serious shopping.

So... you're saying that for what I paid for a new computer recently, one person could get a shirt, a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a pair of boots.

How is that useful to the great majority of Ballard residents? Why did we need another overpriced stuck-up yuppie store? It's not like someone who thinks dropping $200 on a pair of jeans would likely be content at the Starbucks nearby or the used bookstore, or the alternative music store across the street a little ways. They're pricing themselves out of the neighborhood. Maybe something useful will go into the space when they close.

Well first I would like to begin by saying the starbucks' crowd often associates itself with the designer jean market. As I ventured my first time into the store, living just down the road I talked to the owner for some time. Both seemed very pleasant. I would like to point out that the denim selection carried at this store aren't sevens and RR, they seemed to carry lines that weren't overpopulated in the area. From everything I saw in the store, I thought the prices reflected good quality and taste that there clothes possess. I am glad to find a store that is locally owned with clothes I can wear/afford. I would recommend the shop to anyone.
