Even though I am a diehard fan of the sun, I still get excited when fall starts to emerge and I can begin wearing cozy sweaters again. So I cleared a little space in my closet and explored the city to find this season's most fabulous takes on this fashion staple. Since many shoppers are still keeping their purse strings tight, I looked for items that are under $100.

Throughout my search, I found many examples of sweaters adhering to the current fashionable silhouette of long pieces that can be perfectly paired with slim leggings or jeans. Simply changing from ballet flats to a pair of heels or ankle boots can easily change the look from day to night. Many of this season's shorter sweaters are meant to be layered, with a long-sleeved shirt, button-down, or long tank underneath. Here are a few of my finds:

Moth sweater dress, $98 at Anthropologie

My favorite take on sweaters this season is the sweater dress. When I saw this sleeveless gray dress with a feminine cotton trim I practically sprinted to the dressing room. I'm planning on pairing mine with leggings and heels so that I can stay warm without having to hide my stylish new dress under a jacket.

Kensie tunic, $98 at Horseshoe

I was thrilled to see the "Space Dye Geo Tunic" because all the work of putting together an outfit had been taken care of. The oversized neck can take the place of a scarf and the muted reds mixed with black are perfect for fall.

Sweater dress, $48.99 at Aprie

For years, argyle and sweaters have gone hand in hand, and this season is no different. This "Round Neck Dress with Pocket" by Aryen is a trendy version of this theme and is adorable enough to sport on or off the putting green.

Long cardigan, $98 at Dream

If there is one variation of the sweater that will prove to be a staple in your everyday wear this fall it is the long cardigan. This 100 percent acrylic cardigan is available in purple, magenta, rust, charcoal, brown and ivory. Throw one over your outfit to ward off the chills and still keep your outfit pulled together. An even better plus is that it is easily machine washable.

Button cardigan, $68 at Dream

Dream's "Deep V 2 Button Cardigan" gives traditional sweaters an update with the oversized lapel and buttons. Choose from five colors including blue, ivory, berry, gray and black.

Sleeveless cardigan, $58 at Bliss

This sleeveless cardigan at Dream's sister store can be worn like a vest over long-sleeved shirts. I especially liked the details such as the small square pockets and double buttons. It is available in fireside, gravel, boysenberry and new cream.

Pullover sweater, $38 at Moksha

Keep it classic with this pullover sweater. The simple design and color scheme make it easy to pair with your existing closet. Add a statement necklace or bangle to give your outfit individuality and layer this sweater over a collared button-down or long tank.
