First, it was your boyfriend's jeans. Then his oversized button-downs. Now, with the resurrection of the fedora, even his hats are fair game in the current trend of menswear-inspired apparel.

Though the trend has been on the rise for the last few seasons, many citeĀ its recent comeback to the passing of Michael Jackson, who often sported one onstage and throughout many of his videos, including "Smooth Criminal." You can pay homage to the King of Pop by snagging one of your own from a local store.

A lengthwise crease down the crown, a pinch in the fabric in the front, and a wide, pliable rim characterize this distinctive hat. Often it has a band of fabric just above the rim. It can now be found in a variety of materials, colors and patterns.

For today's woman, fedoras are best worn with simpler menswear-inspired outfits such as long pants with a fitted tee and vest; or pair with heels or a light scarf to add a more feminine touch.

In Seattle, one of the biggest varieties of fedoras that I found was at Ballard Home Comforts. Their fall shipments are just arriving, so their collection will continue to grow. Once they have their full stock, the store will carry about eight hat lines including Hat Stack and Joey Collection (prices for Joey hats range about $42).

Edie's Shoes on Capitol Hill has a great variety of embellished fedoras. I particularly liked a black one with a polka-dotted tie around the rim, a small silver pin and a blue embroidered design on the side by Christy's Crown Series ($69).

Another great spot to look is Moksha in the University District, where the fedora fits right into the vibe of this urban and eclectic store. They carry the brand Brixton in styles such as "Gain," "Castor" and "Stroll" ($42-$52) in which the tag reads, "May you never eat your hat if you go hungry."

Nordstrom has a few choices by Juicy Couture, Tarnish and my favorite, Kathy Jeanne's "Paisley Band Fedora," ($38) a wool hat with a silk/polyester band.

If you're running low on cash these days, a great way to get the look is by purchasing a plain fedora, which is often much cheaper than one with a pattern and embellishment, and then making it your own by adding a unique piece of ribbon just above the rim.
