Holiday 2006
On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a Holga from OKOK Gallery. The Holga, a cheap plastic camera that shoots medium-format film, is not a precision instrument; you could shoot the same photo with a hundred different Holgas and not get any two shots that resemble one another.

The duo started their company over a glass of wine in December 2005. Thiele bought a pair of tasseled pasties but never wore them. She wanted something more beautiful, alluring, and playful; something that conjured up images of the sexy – but tasteful – fan dancers of the 1940s. Armed with scissors, glue guns and materials, the pair created flirtatious feathered pasties, floral pasties and butterfly pasties. "We laughed so hard while trying different things," says Thiele.

Just about everything in the Rem Koolhaas-designed Seattle Central Library is far-out, so it's not surprising that the library gift shop has a clever set-up. When it's closed, the third-floor retail store known as the FriendShop resembles a giant, sky-colored box. During business hours, it slides apart into five separate structures loaded with gifts and artwork crafted by local artists.

Ahhh...Valentine's Day. Some people love it and others think it's just another holiday created by corporate evil-doers to make us spend more money or feel like schmucks for blowing it off entirely. Whatever your take on the 14th day of February, taking time out of your everyday routine to officially appreciate your sweetie can't be a bad thing. Nor does it mean you have to subscribe to giving the typical greeting card, red roses or box o' chocolates.
