August 20, 2007 Chocolate shops
Everybody knows Seattle's tops for coffee, but how about that other caffeinated treat? Whether you're a basic chocoholic or an ardent fan of fair-trade cocoa, you'll get your fill from the area's many shops (and chocolatiers, like Fiori and Seattle Chocolates), which offer everything from classic dark chocolate to truffles made with Asian spices.
TALK TO US
Amore Chocolates
(Bellevue)
This friendly little chocolate shop in Old Bellevue makes everything "with love." Husband-and-wife team Isaiah and Brenda Archuletta make all of their hand-dipped chocolates on the premises, from the Seriously Dark to margarita-flavored truffles (you can taste the tequila).
Chocolate Box
(Downtown)
The Chocolate Box, on Pine Street between First and Second avenues near Pike Place Market, is a delight for Seattle chocoholics. And as if having an impressive array of local chocolatiers' wares in one spot weren't enough, there's also a coffee bar, bakery and gelato counter.
Chocolati Cafe (Belltown)
(Belltown)
Chocolati's truffles are hand-dipped, and each decadent bite is made locally with all-natural, fresh ingredients and fair-trade chocolates from Belgium, Ivory Coast, Peru and various parts of South America.
Cocoa Chai Chocolates
(Ballard/Crown Hill)
Hong Kong-born Ivy Chan is the mastermind behind Ballard's Cocoa Chai. True to their name, her unusual bonbons incorporate Asian tea and spices.
Dilettante Chocolate Cafe
(Capitol Hill)
Dilettante Chocolate Cafe's rich decor beckons you to slow down, cozy up at a table for two and indulge. Order a latte and linger over a plate of delicate truffles, bread pudding or a decadent piece of cake. If you're truly the indulgent type, you can buy an entire cake on your way out the door.
Fran's Chocolates
(University/Montlake)
You know you're in a serious chocolate salon when the salespeople are dressed like gourmet chefs and they handle their confections like rare jewels. And like fine gems, Fran's chocolates are expensive, expertly crafted and leave you wanting more.
Oh! Chocolate (Madison Park)
(Madison Park/Madrona)
Some of Oh! Chocolate's classic and innovative delights include tiramisu; superdark bittersweet truffle with chocolate liquor and cream; and the Figaro truffle, which has a layer of fig paste and cabernet.
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
(Pioneer Square)
Who doesn't like candy apples? Or chocolate-covered ones, for that matter? Rocky Mountain sells boxed chocolates, toffees, mints, licorice, chocolate sauces and other sweets -- as well as those delightful apples.
See's Candies
(Downtown)
Chocolate, fudge, brittle, toffee -- this San Francisco-based chain makes 'em all. Their chocolate selection includes some unusual items, such as the trademarked Marshmints, which combine mint flavor with chocolate and everyone's favorite squishy white sugary treat.
Theo Chocolate
(Fremont)
Theo is the first roaster of fair-trade cocoa beans and the only organic chocolate factory in the nation. The company's chocolate bars are available at many local retailers, including PCC, Whole Foods Markets and others. But we recommend visiting the factory directly for your chocolate fix.
