When I was a kid, a family friend would send a big tin filled with popcorn to our house for the holidays. I was overjoyed by the sheer amount of caramel, cheese and buttered popcorn contained within the tin, consuming it by the handful until I could eat no more.

I had forgotten all about those yearly tins of popcorn until I came across KuKuRuZa, a newly opened gourmet popcorn shop, the walls of which are lined with those familiar tins, just waiting to be filled with delicious popped corn.

KuKuRuZa means corn in Russian (popcorn in Russian is, well, popcorn), and is the pet project-turned-profession of George Marema and chef Robert Hicks. What began as caramel-corn experiments in Marema's home kitchen has evolved into more than 25 flavors of popcorn. All KuKuRuZa popcorn is air popped daily in small, oil-free batches, which gives it a light, fresh quality, and Marema and Hicks insist on using the finest ingredients, such as real butter and high-quality chocolate.

KukuRuZa popcorn comes in five categories: classic flavors like Caramel Corn and Cheddar Cheese; decadent flavors like Rocky Road (caramel corn, cashews, almonds, pecans and marshmallows drenched in milk- and white chocolate); jazzy options that include Rainbow Mixed Fruit (popcorn covered in naturally derived fruit flavors); classy flavors like Caramel with Cashews; and the cocktail hour-inspired After Five Collection, which includes Burgundy Cheddar Cheese, Irish Cream Coffee and Amaretto Almond.

Also in the mix are seasonal flavors like Gingerbread Frost, Egg Nog with Chocolate Brandy and Candy Cane Caramel. Bring a bag (or two) of these flavors to your company holiday party and you'll be the most popular person in the office.

Customers are invited to stop in and try a sample. Prices start at $2.50 for a Classic quart and range up to $5 for a Decadent quart. Half-gallon and gallon bags are also available, and range from $4.89 to $13.69. Tins, available in one to 10 gallons, start at $17.99.

You should have free samples, such as a sample handful (5 kernels) it would be great! Boi! I would buy dozens of kernels!

I tried this place when it first opened - it's very good. My only suggestion is to offer a smaller small size. I got the smallest size of the s'more flavor for $4 and it was way too rich for a snack. Offer a smaller size for $2.50 or $3.00 and I might go back. (I threw out half of the bag as I didn't want to eat more later.)

Kukuruza does now offer a smaller small when asked, just not on display in the window with the typical sizes. Same policy on samples. :D and there's talk of a few new flavors around the corner!
