The most celebratory of all beverages, champagne and sparkling wine shine during the holidays, whether they hail from France, Napa Valley or just across the bridge in Woodinville. We've compiled (and taste-tested) some of the best bubbly available locally, to serve at your next party, give to your favorite hostess or order at your preferred watering hole.
Best bubbles to pour at a party
Domaine Ste. Michelle Frizzante, Woodinville, Wash.
This slightly sweet (but not cloying) sparkling wine is smooth and pairs nicely with a sampler of pungent cheeses or other flavorful party fare. $12.99 at Safeway and QFC stores.
Domaine Ste. Michelle Luxe, Woodinville, Wash.
This bracing Blanc de Blancs (white wine made from white grapes) with a surprising pineapple taste is made from a blend of Chardonnay grapes and stays fizzy even after being open for a few hours. $19.99 at Esquin Wine Merchants.
Best bubbles to give as gifts
Lucien Albrecht Cremant d'Alsace Brut Rosé, Alsace, France
This creamy rosé is a product of Alsatian winemakers who have been in the wine business since 1425. It looks and tastes more expensive than it actually is, making it an affordable holiday gift. $14.99 at Esquin Wine Merchants.
Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label, Champagne, France
A signature yellow box houses this quintessential French bubbly, making it the perfect hostess gift. $39.99 at QFC stores.
Blue Mountain Cider Company, Walla Walla, Wash.
These zesty hard apple ciders in cherry and cranberry flavors make a refreshing Northwest alternative to sparkling wines. $10.99 at QFC stores.
Best bubbles to order at the bar
Sofia Mini Blanc de Blancs, Napa, California
A great conversation starter, Sofia Coppolla's eponymous sparkler is served in a fuchsia can with a matching straw. $8 at Viceroy in Belltown.
Penedes Montsarra Cava Brut, Penedes, Spain
This crisp Spanish sparkling wine nicely complements flavorful tapas such as wild boar meatballs or red-pepper hummus. $9 per glass at Purple Café and Wine Bar.
