Tsu Chong’s fortune cookies: Crunchy treats with sage sayings

What does the future hold for you? Ask your fortune cookie. Better yet, plant your own prophecies inside them for any auspicious occasion.
At the Tsu Chong Company in Chinatown International District you can special order fortune cookies with sage sayings or predictions. Just write your own inserts and cut them according to the specifications. A 1-pound bag costs $5.50 and yields 60-65 cookies. Or, order the same custom message for each cookie and Tsu Chong will cut and stuff 'em for you. Those are $8.50 a pound. For individually wrapped cookies, add $3.50 a pound. There is a 1 pound minimum order. Turn around time is two days.
The cookies are a clever addition to weddings, bridal and baby showers, birthdays, going-away parties, or a Chinese New Year gathering. Having a baby shower? "You will have triplets – all girls." Moving? "You will have many out of town guests." Getting married? "Your in-laws will share much advice with you." Office party? "You will receive praise rather than a raise for your hard work." Let your imagination (and devilry) run wild.
If you're a non-believer but like the tasty cookies, purchase a bag of "unfortunates," flat fortune cookies that cooled too quickly to be folded. They're $1.75 for 1 pound and $6 for 5 pounds. The outlet also has packaged fortune cookies in a variety of flavors such as chocolate, cinnamon, lemon and strawberry at $1.10 for a 4-ounce bag.
Note: the storefront on South Weller Street is temporarily closed. Walk around the corner to 508 Eighth Ave. S.
