Modern-Twist
Protect your table with stylish mats and coasters

Visit any mass retailer looking for placemats and you are likely to find heavy, dated fabrics in colors and designs better suited for a hotel restaurant. Stop by a home décor store for coasters and you'll be faced with heavy wood or metal varieties that may protect your tabletop but do nothing for your honed sense of clean design. Thankfully, a commune of Bay area designers have teamed up with ringleader Kat Nouri to collaborate on a light-hearted (and light-weight) collection of placemats, coasters, table runners and unique wine charms called Vinotagz. The line is sold under the name Modern-Twist. Modern-Twist items, like the Vinotagz, are crafted out of translucent silicone, which means your guests can personalize their wine charms – and you can simply wipe it off to use at the next soiree.
The designs share a simple, crisp aesthetic and tap into nature for inspiration. Retro colors and modern patterns will enhance, but not overwhelm, your dining room table. The collections are available at Capers (Fremont) and at Velocity Art and Design. A set of six Vinotagz is $14, coasters are sold in sets of four for $20.
