J. Crew opens new kids' shop Crewcuts at University Village

National retailer J. Crew did its homework before deciding to open its new stand-alone kids' store -- its first on the West Coast -- at University Village earlier this month.
On most days, the outdoor mall, often referred to as Maternity Village, bustles with moms, strollers and kids of all ages. And even during a recession, University Village attracts well-heeled customers who can afford the spendy kids' clothes at Crewcuts.
J. Crew has produced a children's collection since 2005, but it didn't really capture the country's attention until first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama wore candy-colored Crewcuts ensembles from the fall collection to President Obama's inauguration.
With the opening of the University Village store May 12, there are now five stand-alone Crewcuts shops and 42 Crewcuts departments within J. Crew shops nationwide. Previously, none of the Seattle-area J. Crew shops carried the collection, which features "mini-me" looks from the company known for its fun, classic style.
Crewcuts' current collection features girls' summer dresses in vibrant colors and patterns ($49.50 to $78) and classic boys' seersucker suits (blazers $118, pants $58). Those prices are pretty high for kids' clothes, but the clothes are well made and classic enough to pass on to younger kids next summer.
On the casual side, girls' tees and tank tops start at $10.50; preppy chino mini shorts are $29.50; cardigans start at $39.50; and flip-flops, headbands and necklaces range from $16.50 to $24.50. Cute sparkly ballet flats are a jaw-dropping $98 -- a splurge for kids' shoes even in the best of times.
This season's boys' clothes have a distinct Hamptons feel to them. From rugby shirts and plaid shorts (both $49.50) to on-trend slub jersey pocket tees (on sale for $10.50) and polo shirts ($24.50), Crewcuts has everything you need to outfit your little man in classic country club style.
The store itself has white walls with accents of neon pink and vibrant orange, and a chartreuse front door -- kind of a beachy Mod look. The sales team is friendly and helpful, and thankfully, the music is hip but not loud or jarring -- something moms and dads can do without while shopping with their kids.
