The previously online-only toy retailer Nico & Zoe has opened a showroom in West Seattle, allowing shoppers hands-on access to their collection of Barbie-free fun. The store specializes in artisan-made toys for children up to 6 years old, from wooden pull-toys to locally made sock monkeys.

Accessing the showroom involves a bit of sleuthing: It's a small nook tucked away in the ActivSpace building in Luna Park. Visitors have to go around back to the elevator, dial #321 for admittance and navigate a long corridor to the shop. The reward is a small room cheerfully bursting with felt food, classic books and other goodies.

Among the offerings: Fremont publisher Laughing Elephant's vintage reproduction books, including die-cut versions of "The Night Before Christmas" (1917 version) and "Mother Goose" ($8 and $9.95, respectively); knitted octopi in psychedelic colors by Blackbird Fashion ($26); and jack-in-the-boxes that conceal monkeys and dogs ($28).

As part of their commitment to sourcing quality toys, Nico & Zoe pulled a toy made in China whose safety they questioned off their shelves and will order no new products from China.

Nico & Zoe is at 3400 Harbor Ave SW #321. Visit the showroom online at www.nicoandzoe.com.
