This time of year is full of special shopping events, craft shows and extended hours at malls and stores. You can't swing a reusable shopping bag without hitting one, which is great for those of us who like to support small local businesses.

With the right combination of venue, vendors, vino and vittles, a shopping event can turn into a social hour and holiday party, bringing good cheer to all who attend -- especially if there's a great deal to be found.

Amanda Rosenthal, owner of online boutique La Rousse, has hit the nail on the head with the La Rousse Holiday Bazaar, by pulling together an event that fulfills all the criteria: cool location, interesting vendors, delicious food and drink, and a focus on gift ideas under $100.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m., Capitol Hill hot spot Smith will be transformed into your personal shopping pub. Choose a beverage from the list of drink specials and munch on free fries while browsing clothing, jewelry and more.

La Rousse will offer clothes from its current winter collections at 30 to 50 percent off, including coats, sweaters and shoes from brands like Melissa, Feral Child, Mercy and Grey Ant.

Local interior designer April Pride Allison will also be on hand, selling her kaarsKoker line of chandelier candle sleeves. Perfect for the recipient who loves interior design, these cardboard sleeves wrapped in gorgeous paper are meant to slip over the plain white fixtures common on chandeliers and candle sconces, easily (and inexpensively) updating or changing the look of the chandelier.

New to me are the designs of Masha Osoianu, which will also be for sale. I'm blown away by her one-of-a-kind handmade eveningwear that combines 100 percent silk painted batiks with hand-knitted trim. Her pieces are romantic, elegant and sophisticated -- perfect for a special gift for yourself.

Another participating vendor is Krista Faye, one of my favorite local jewelers, whose earrings, bracelets and necklaces are an amazing combination of vintage beads and modern style. Also available will be delicate, feminine jewelry from Namiko Nakamura and Phoebe Grant; and handmade note cards on recycled paper from Otra Vez.

To attend, RSVP to rsvp@la-rousse.com.
