On the Way Maternity is West Seattle's newest on-ramp to the mommy track. Tucked away on a leafy block of California Avenue, just south of the Junction, the new shop joins kids' stores Georgia Blu and Again & A Gain in the family-friendly retail neighborhood.

Don't be put off by the somewhat utilitarian space and lighting: Racks and tables here brim with high-quality brands, including Maternité (a black and white striped boatneck sweater costs $74) and Hollywood mama-to-be favorite 1 In The Oven (a soft cotton nursing henley is $54). Prices range from middle-of-the-road to high-end, and expectant shoppers can stock up on yoga gear, business wear, dresses and nursing bras.

Baby accoutrements run the gamut from Phil & Ted Sport strollers ($399) to Portland-based Posh Baby water-resistant diaper bags ($159) in stylish stripes and flowers. Also in stock: the pregnant woman's lifesaver, Snoogle, a bendable body pillow that conforms to the particular challenges of sleeping while sporting a late-term belly ($52).

Come December, look for an increased selection. The store is expanding its inventory to include furniture, such as Sorelle cribs and Dutailier gliders and ottomans, along with a wider range of strollers (Zooper all-terrain strollers among them).
