Blanchard Mountain towers more than 2,200 feet above Samish Bay -- along with adjacent Chuckanut Mountain it's the only place where the Cascade Range touches the briny tidelands.

Hike of the Week
"Uh-oh, we're on the wrong trail," I said to Lola Kemp, "I think we're going to Lily Lake." Don't get me wrong, I love Lily Lake, but our goal was Oyster Dome, a high point overlooking Samish Bay in the southern Chuckanuts near Bellingham.
Some consider Oyster Dome to be Bellingham's version of Mount Si, because getting to the viewpoint is strenuous.

Blanchard Mountain is Bellingham's version of Tiger Mountain, with a network of trails that can be hiked year-round.
It takes several visits to get to know the mountain; after a recent hike to Samish Overlook, we returned to explore one of the trails that leads to Lily Lake.
A smattering of small lakes adds spice to the second-growth forest of Blanchard Mountain, a result of logging in the 1920s and '30s. A lake always makes a good destination and since many lakes are still snowbound, Lily and nearby Lizard lakes were ideal.
