The only problem with Portage Bay Cafe, the 10-year-old University District brunch
favorite, was that it could indeed be the next ice age before you got to
stick your fork into a crab Benedict. So John and Amy Gunnar took the right cue and opened the doors of
their second restaurant in South Lake Union, without changing a thing.
This is much better than a little sibling. It's an identical twin.

New name, same brunch. Different decor, same brunch. New dinner menu, new chef, more wine, full bar, same brunch, same brunch, same brunch.

Convergence Zone
The denizens of Lower Queen Anne know they've got a good thing going, with nearly every heart's desire just a short walk away. Add to this list of amenities a new option for that most indulgent of weekend meals: brunch, now served Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moxie, on First Avenue North.

What We Crave
Delicious, simple Southwestern food is cuisine orgami: Wrap cheese and sauce in a tortilla this way, and it's a taco. Fold it that way, it's a burrito. Add an egg, and ta-da! ... it's huevos rancheros. The migas (mee-yas) at Portage Bay Café ($11.95) in the University District is like all three rolled into one and served piping hot for breakfast.

When it comes to chichi restaurants, I have a serious fear of commitment. They bat their eyelashes, make lots of promises and turn on the come-hither charm, and even though you've heard through the grapevine they might be a little sketchy, your curiosity wins out and you finally break down and go. Then what do you know? They let you down. The next day you find yourself alone at the gym, feeling poor, fat and regretful that you didn't heed the warnings.

Vegans get hangovers, too. That's probably why weekend breakfasts are keeping Georgetown's new vegan cafe, Squid & Ink, hopping.

Ballard is fast becoming Seattle's breakfast epicenter. Fans of the most important meal of the day have a wealth of options, among them the hearty breakfasts served at the Hi-Life, the excellent weekend brunches at Volterra and the weekday take-away choices at Café Besalu. Vera's, Senor Moose Cafe, Hattie's Hat, Nervous Nellie's, The Dish, Wild Mountain Café and even Cupcake Royale all offer a tasty breakfast. If the bars and clubs of Belltown and Capitol Hill hold the franchise on Seattle nightlife, the cafes and restaurants of Ballard have a lock on curing the town's collective hangover.

Life Behind Bars
Patrons are treated equally well. Skylark never charges a cover for its Thursday through Saturday live music nights. It's rather like stopping by your best friend's garage for free jams and eating out of his mother's kitchen-every item on the menu is homemade, including an array of sauces that reverberate on the palate.
