It all started with "Transformers." The unusual trailer that preceded last summer's blockbuster raised more questions than it answered. Shot on digital video, it depicted an attack on New York City by something with a really loud roar. Soon CNBC and other media outlets put together some of the pieces of "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams' newest puzzle: a monster movie in the "Godzilla" vein.

Convergence Zone
Twenty-five years ago, two visions of the future were unveiled. One was a Disney theme park, EPCOT Center, which envisioned the future as a technological utopia presided over by benevolent corporations. The other vision belonged to director Ridley Scott, whose film "Blade Runner" envisioned the future as a smog-choked, crime-ridden dystopia presided over by bloodthirsty corporations. You probably don't have to guess which way we ended up leaning.
