When I recently walked into shimmering new boutique Dolce Vita, which
opened last month in Ballard, I was overwhelmed with the sense that I
had somehow been transported to L.A. -- or more specifically, West
Hollywood, where local actress Josie Bissett ran fictional "Melrose
Place" boutique Jane Mancini Designs.

In circles where phrases like “resort wear” and “Hampton cottage” are tossed about, Tory Burch is a household name. Away from New York society, the name is less well known but that is quickly changing. As a blossoming designer, socialite (and Lance Armstrong’s newest love) Burch is redefining the summer wardrobe by reintroducing a classic Eastern inspired staple – the tunic – into her stylish set. In a world where most boutiques major in art or philosophy, Mercer is the pragmatic MBA graduate of fashion. You will find no boudoir lighting, tufted ottomans or Parisian soundtracks here. Built by owner Karen Bonomo on a foundation of 20 years of retail experience, Mercer is all business.

My friends tell me I'm the most difficult kind of shopper, one who wants it cheap AND good. In my defense, I'll say that what I'm really after is value, and I'm more than willing to pay a fair price - or go out of my way - for something that is truly worth it.

Call it an air-headed waste of time, retail therapy or a seasonal must. However you feel about it, chances are at this time of year, you're going to notice a flurry of retail activity around you. And for champion shoppers, there's nothing like shopping in another city. New stores, different goods and (possibly) better bargains are always a draw.
And in the case of Vancouver, B.C., the added buying power of the U.S. dollar doesn't hurt.
