Hike of the Week
Mid-April is about the time it hits you -- spring fever! You can keep it at bay for a while, but sooner or later you'll give in and make that first sojourn to the east side.
Yes, the cost of gas is painful, but even that is not enough to stop us from scratching that itch for sun, flowers, the scent of sage and the slower tempo of the channeled scablands of Grant County. Save your pennies, carpool, or plan a weekend. But go!

Short Trips
After he and his wife, Jennifer, climbed out of their 19-foot boat following a day of fishing on Blue Lake in Central Washington, Kurt Middleton pointed toward his family's tent near the beach and admitted that tent camping with a 1-year-old and 4-year-old is trying.
But to Middleton, a paramedic from Wenatchee, the scenery, fishing and weather this time of year, plus a waterfront campsite at the Coulee Lodge Resort, made it all worth while -- as long as the wind didn't blow too hard.

Our annual Boy Scout desert hike is the one everyone wants to go on -- even adults. We could hardly wait for this hike after the long winter.
Every time we drive over Snoqualmie Pass toward the Columbia Basin, I marvel anew at the dramatic transition between the western and eastern sides of the Cascades -- from rain forest to desert.
If you're new to the Northwest or have never hiked in the desert, it might take some getting used to.
