Sometime in the spring, when most area ski lifts roll to a halt, I
imagine dogs across town heave a communal sigh of relief. The season of
their people heading to the mountains without them is finally over.
Now, when the backcountry beckons, dogs -- trail dogs, that is -- can
answer the call. Ahhhh-ooooh.

Last week, a the 26-year-old Seattle vaccine scientist hung up his lab coat to pursue outdoor adventure with his dog full-time. In a few weeks, David Sylvester and Chiva, a shepherd-husky mix, will begin a quest to bike the continental United States and climb to the highest point in each state.

To some hikers, taking their dog on a trail provides them with the company of a trusty companion, a measure of security, a sense of bonding with their pet and great exercise for both amid the wonders of the natural world.
But to others, man's best friend is one of the worst enemies of the wilderness, running around intimidating hikers, chasing deer and other wildlife, ruining the serenity of the forest by barking and fouling the environment.
