When Brian McGuffy and Leif Holland, the owners of Capitol Hill home-décor store Square Room, traveled to Europe this past year, they decided to forgo restricting their finds and shipped back a shop's worth of tchotchkes, curios and bibelots.

Kitchen gadgets galore. Japanese snack crackers. Cleaning gear. Plastic containers and strainers. Pet and children's toys. Lots of knick knacks and figurines from soldiers to Southern belles. A whole wall of plastic bags to cover everything from video tapes to clothing.
