On July 4th, I usually hide under the bed, cowering and covering my ears. Here are other ideas for this sparkler-strewn weekend.

In 11 years of summer birthday parties for my son, I've tried it all. I've hosted June swim parties at Angelfish Swimming in Kirkland, and we've gone to a Mariners' game at Safeco Field, complete with birthday wishes on the scoreboard. But in our region, there are also numerous parks, beaches, pools and stadiums
where you can create a memorable experience for your child without
breaking the bank. Here are some ideas that are great for summer.

If you let a kid in the forest be a kid, he or she will take to
hiking like moss takes to a streamside boulder during a damp spring.
That means letting your little ones get a bit dirty and wet, letting
them pick up bugs and worms and letting them stop along the trail to,
say, get a pungent whiff of skunk cabbage. And you just might find yourself growing an active and healthy young
hiker with a sense of connection to what makes the Northwest the
Northwest.

If your child entertains fantasies of running off with the circus, you might want to sign her up for this summer's first-ever Camp ZinZanni, put on by the ZinZanni Institute for Circus Art. (Yes, that's their real name. This is serious stuff.)
