The Baker lift circuit stretches out over two peaks within spitting distance of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. Chairs
1, 2, 3 and 6 provide access to the 5,000-foot Panorama Dome, while 4, 5, 7, and 8 service the 5,540-foot Shuksan Arm.
Baker operates two major parking lots, each servicing one of the two peaks. From each lot, the top is just two chair
rides away. Shifting from one peak to the next is just a couple of chair lifts as well.

Baker lies in one of the highest portions of the Cascade Mountains, surrounded by peaks such as the ski area's namesake Mount Baker (10,750 feet) and neighboring Mount Shuksan (9,270 feet). These colossal mounds rise dramatically from the coastal lowlands much like Mount Rainier and Mount Adams. The two towering peaks and surrounding terrain act like a mainline injection of steroids to the local precipitation levels. Area crewmembers spent much of their time during the winter digging out trail signs 20 feet tall, or even extending them. Baker simply gets buried every single year.

MOUNT BAKER — "Is that them? Is that them? ... Yes, that's them!"
By Mike McQuaide | January 25, 2007
It was a frosty Saturday morning in January, and there we were on the snowy banks of the Nooksack River at the foot of Mount Baker. A bunch of newbies on cross-country skis, doing our best not to end up splayed on the snow, involuntarily making snow angels.
We were in an "Introduction to Cross-Country Skiing" class, one of the dozens of low-cost, high-fun classes, outings and trips offered by Whatcom County Parks Outdoor Recreation Program.

It's been an unusual season for Northwest ski areas, with snow coming little and late (perhaps thanks to El Niño). Most Washington resorts didn't open until the last few weeks. Finally, major ski areas are open around the state.
Here's a roundup of basic information; prices, hours and number of lifts operating may still vary based on snow amounts and conditions. Call or check the Web before you go.

Sometimes they're delightfully ahead of it (snowboarding, way before it was cool, or practically even invented), sometimes charmingly behind it (snow from heaven, not hoses), but the folks at
Mount Baker can never be accused of being right on the curve.
The tradition continues this winter, when Baker, in a world where resorts measure progress in new, multi-million dollar express lifts, unveils a $1.6 million ski-area upgrade which reduces its overall chairlift total.

Short Trips
For years I always considered Mount Baker a ski destination. I don't ski, so I never had the itch to visit there, even during the summer. But deep down I've always wanted to see Mount Baker up close.
