Convergence Zone
This was Mother's Day, and nary a word from my cats. A phone call, a card-too much to ask? It was obvious that I'd have to take myself out, if anyone was going to. And on a clear Seattle day, I can't see anything but mountains.

Hike of the Week
Most hikers know that Mount Si gets more use than any other trail in the region. Situated in North Bend, it's easy to access and provides a hearty workout for a variety of outdoor enthusiasts getting into shape for summer hikes and climbs.
In 1907, a visit to the peak was daunting, often a four-day affair. That year a party of Mountaineers left Seattle for a club ascent of Mount Si. There were no interstate highways then -- the Mountaineers took a train to Snoqualmie. It took a day just to get there.

NORTH BEND -- Seems like the whole world is laid out before you when -- finally -- sweaty and weary, you reach the top of the leg-burner known as Mount Si.
It also seems like the whole world is with you.
You pick out an unoccupied perch among the rocky crags of Haystack Basin, break out your water and lunch and look up: Wham! You're eyeball-to-eyeball with Mount Rainier's north face.

Some hikers are finding this spring very frustrating, with a snowpack that might last well into summer.
The lack of snow-free trails has dampened my motivation, with many access roads to favorite hikes still closed. Other than desert hikes, there's not much available east of the mountains, either. The Olympics aren't much better.
