Gentle Snark
This week brings a fount of pleasant diversions. A Robert-Frippin' fount, I tell you.

This Presidents' Day weekend brings with it a particularly sad farewell: Sonic Boom's Fremont location is closing forever. The beloved record store has survived an earthquake and zombie invasion, but its time has come.

Monday: Physically she may be all woman, but in spirit, transgender singer-songwriter and harpist Baby Dee occupies a place halfway between Rufus Wainwright and Joanna Newsom. Her pillow-soft falsetto may strike you as comical at first, but then the emotion of her delivery begins to stick and the brilliance of her songwriting becomes readily apparent. Tonight, she visits the Triple Door, a perfect venue for her affecting cabaret ballads. The fine local folksinger David Karsten Daniels shares the bill.

Monday: Look, I can't pretend to like everything that's coming
out of England these days. Editors are a case in point: While I concede
that the Mercury-nominated Birmingham indie-rock band has a punchy and
expansive sound, they also bore the living hell out of me. I don't get
how the kids can dismiss old-timers like U2, Simple Minds and The Call
while embracing younger bands that sound exactly like them. Must be a
MySpace thing; I swear to God that this whole social-networking trend
is gonna end in tears. Anyway, Editors play Showbox at the Market tonight with Hot Hot Heat, Louis XIV and ... and ... I drifted off for a moment, sorry.

Monday: By now you've no doubt planned your New Year's Eve down
to the moment you fall, fully clothed, into bed. If you're stuck for
ideas, however, I advise you to check out these five suggestions on how you should spend the last night of the year, and this list of New Year's Eve parties
around town. They won't tell you how to keep from getting sick in a
taxicab, but they're pretty helpful in most other regards. Cheers, and
stay safe.

To be honest with you, I'm not planning to go out on New Year's Eve. My liquor cabinet is full, which makes it fairly easy for me to fill my house with friends. I don't need to take my chances with Yellow Cab, who recently refused to pick me up at Little Red Studio because they didn't believe it existed. ("Quit making up addresses and wasting our time," the dispatcher growled.) Also, have you played "Rock Band" It's a sheer delight. I can be Rivers Cuomo in the privacy of my own home: My looooove is a heeeart-breakerrrrr.

It's a terrible loss to Seattle nightlife. A galaxy of future local stars -- including Nirvana, Band of Horses, Death Cab for Cutie and Modest Mouse -- once graced the Croc's tiny stage. Hundreds of up-and-coming bands, from the Strokes and the Decemberists to the Killers, played the club shortly before they broke big.

The Crocodile Cafe, a legendary Seattle rock club where many local up-and-comers played before launching into the national spotlight, has closed its doors, said Eli Anderson, the club's booking agent.

It's going to be business as usual at Showbox at the Market and Showbox SoDo, despite the sale of the two clubs to AEG Live, a Los Angeles-based concert promotion company with a worldwide reach.

You may have noticed that the weather has been a tad… moody of late. And while we have yet to invent a device that alters the course of our city's meteorological fate, there's an invention already in place that can help you mitigate the effects of the local climate's multiple-personality disorder. It's called a spa, and quite a few of them around town are offering holiday deals on treatments that offer some relief from the snow/flood/wind/sleet/hail/mudslide/avalanche conditions of the past week.
