Summer trips to the ocean with my dog are risky. Whenever my Border collie sprints ahead at 40 miles per hour, her nose low to the ground and fixed on some alluring scent, I know I'm in trouble.

Little Kids, Big City
In a refreshing change from the usual car washes and bake sales that typically comprise school fund raisers, the class of 2009 at West Seattle High School has put together, for the second year in a row, the Pet Rodeo and Snooty Walk. This year's event will be held Saturday, April 19 at Hiawatha Playfield.

I remember the first time I saw a laser-etched tile on a tombstone. I was at Pet Haven Cemetery in Kent, Washington, a few years ago, and the photorealistic portraits of cats, dogs and people on grave markers startled me. These weren't the weathered, chiseled stones with barely legible names and dates that I remembered from my last visit to an old cemetery.

Back in the 1970s, a pair of Northwest vets started something called the Delta Foundation to fund research into the health benefits of the human-animal bond. It was the dark ages, and the idea that companion animals could measurably contribute to better mental and physical health still needed to be quantified. And so it was. Study after study demonstrated the advantages of living with pets, including lowered blood pressure and stress, reduced cholesterol levels, and extended life-expectancy in heart-attack patients.

The Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Lynnwood circulated its top ten animal-friendly resolutions a few days before the corks popped. I'm normally averse to setting New Year's goals; running a marathon and learning banjo have actually fossilized on my Master To-Do list.

This Halloween, we want to see your cats dressed as dogs and your dogs as cats. We want to see the family tabby made up as a pirate and your boyfriend's pug outfitted in the garb of, say, Christopher Walken. The bottom line is, we want photos of your pets in Halloween costumes, and the more of them the better. Send them in and we'll post them in our Halloween gallery.

At about a dozen off-leash parks in the greater Seattle area, they run, they chase, they bark, they strut, they squat, they socialize and they sniff out the opposite sex.
And you should see some of the things the dogs do, too.
Scratch the surface of any off-leash area and you'll find out these free-ranging places are as much for the human species as the canine.

If you're looking for a new place to visit with your dog, head over the West Seattle Bridge to
Alki Beach.
For 2.5 miles a paved trail hugs the Sound; perfect for walking or running with your pet. If you want to let your dog do some work for once, try letting him pull you on skates the grass beside the path will cushion your fall. Good weather fills the beach with volleyball players, sunbathers and weenie roasters.
