Evergreen State Fair: loads of food, games and rides

If you're 100 years old or more, the Evergreen State Fair needs you! To celebrate its 100th anniversary this year, the fair wants to set the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of centenarians Monday. It won't cost you a thing — everyone age 90 and older gets into the fair free every day (this Monday is free for everyone age 62 and older).

I know this is late notice, but if your weekend is open and you're just itching to spend the night with a few thousand hippies like yourself, the Summer Meltdown Music and Camping Festival beckons. From Aug. 8 through 10, the Whitehorse Mountain Amphitheater in Darrington -- 65 miles northeast of town -- will host nearly 30 regional and national acts, cranking out everything from hip-hop to bluegrass.

Keep pets safe this weekend during Seafair

With the Blue Angels in town, the Seattle Humane Society would like to remind pet owners that dogs and cats are much more sensitive to loud noises than we are. My dogs are terrified of fireworks and I imagine the roar of jets flying overhead is quite similar.

Happening Friday, Aug. 8, the South Lake Union Block Party is full of awesome. The grounds of the South Lake Union Discovery Center, at the corner of Westlake and Denny, are going to overflow with awesomeness. The awesomeness will stick to your clothes, which I promise you isn't half as gross as it sounds.

This year I was asked to be on the august panel of judges for the 2008 Bite of Seattle. I've just come from Seattle Center, having sampled the equivalent of three dinners, at least one of them pure salmon.

I figure I've got about 10, maybe 20 minutes tops before food coma gets the better of me, so I'll give you some quick impressions of the event while I'm still able to form cogent sentences.

Monday, July 14 is the 218th anniversary of the Fête de la Fédération. On that day in 1790, scores of Parisians gathered on the Champ de Mars to celebrate the end of the French Revolution.

Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, Marquis de Lafayette and Louis XVI performed crowd-pleasing sets; the Three Estates had a meet-cute; and nearly everyone went bat-merde, drinking wine and running naked in the streets. It took four days for the last straggler to sober up and go home.

We've gone to Northwest Folklife for the past two years with minimal tears, using strategy the military could only aspire to. But this is Folklife ... so it's a tie-dyed, guitar-strumming, patchouli-scented strategy that might not work so well on a real battlefield.
