I have a cousin who spends considerable time in Kazakhstan, a niece who lives on an organic chocolate farm in Costa Rica and a dear friend who resides steps from the Hague. Keeping track of time zones in order to avoid the poorly timed 2 a.m. phone call is nearly impossible.

Luckily, San Francisco designer Peter Stathis understands my conundrum. He's developed Knowhere Clocks ($79), clever 24-hour clocks with multiple hands to keep track of up to eight time zones.

Seattleites may be familiar with Antique Row in Tacoma, but there's more than tchotchke-filled shops here. The pedestrian-friendly area that includes the Theater District makes for a nice day trip and change of shopping scenery. You'll find everything from estate jewelry to the latest in pricey denim in this historic section of town.

Stop in almost any shop and ask for one of the handy little neighborhood maps to guide you. Here are a few of my favorite stops.

My vintage kitchen clock from the 1940s has been chugging away (sometimes with a great deal of racket), keeping perfect time over the years. Finally, the little red teapot-shaped clock heaved one big clunking sigh and gave out. I packed it up and took it my favorite horologist, Jody Laine, owner of Tiempo Timepieces & Jewelry on Capitol Hill. Tiempo is one of those old-fashioned, service-oriented businesses-they can pop a new battery in your trendy Skagen wristwatch or repair Grandma's antique mantel clock.

On a recent visit to Retrofit Home I could not come up with a single Daily Find. Instead, I came up with several. Let's start with the eye-catching, lacquered, polyresin pieces. The group includes picture frames with a textured floral motif, antler shaped wall sconces, candlestick holders and vases.
