I work within a few steps of the soon-to-debut South Lake Union Trolley ... er, Streetcar. Like so many who work in the Cascade ... oops, I mean South Lake Union area, I will soon be able to hop the streetcar at lunchtime and dine at the upper-crust establishments in Westlake Center: They have a McDonald's and a Sbarro.

The smell of hot grease overwhelms you when you first walk in the door of lower Queen Anne's new sports bar. Don't turn around, though - once you're licking it from your fingers, cheering on a championship cricket game you thought no one in this time zone would bother to show, you'll be glad you're there.

Fix a broken evening at King's Hardware

If I had a hammer, I'd probably put it down before I accidentally smashed my thumb, as is my custom with such instruments. Handiwork just isn't my thing. However, the instruments offered at King's Hardware - a new Ballard bar from the mind of Linda Derschang, of Linda's Tavern and Viceroy fame - are not only familiar to me, but I am fairly expert in their use: the martini glass, the jukebox and the Skee-Ball. I can't use these things to repair a lamp or frame a doorway – but they can fix a bad day, no problem.

At a recent comedy show in Belltown, the emcee poked fun at a group of women who drove in from Bellevue. "The only culture in Bellevue," he taunted, "is bacteria." It was a bad joke, but it produced more than a few snickers from the crowd.

Seattle barflies seem to disregard the Eastside, but just over the 520 Bridge are some swanky new clubs and long-time favorite taverns. Whether you're after a dive bar where you can listen to Pat Benatar or a place to be seen with your Prada purse, there's a perfect spot for you outside of the Seattle city limits.
