In an economic downturn, drastic measures have to be taken to kick-start the economy. Most of them are kind of stupid. The federal goverment is issuing tax rebate "incentive" checks that we're going to blow on our ever-mounting debt. Retailers are offering cash incentives on big-ticket items we can't afford anyway.

Happy hour at Dragonfish Asian Cafe has long been a magnet for downtown workers looking for a cure for the 9-to-5 blues. The $2 sushi half-rolls and $3 cocktails get most of the press, but it's the delicate little cubes of ahi bathed in a light soy and sesame sauce, and flecked with fresh little sprigs of cilantro and chives, that really get us smiling (just $3.95 at happy hour, regularly $8.95). The supple tuna creation sits atop a bed of wakame that has none of that overpowering seaweedy taste.

I work within a few steps of the soon-to-debut South Lake Union Trolley ... er, Streetcar. Like so many who work in the Cascade ... oops, I mean South Lake Union area, I will soon be able to hop the streetcar at lunchtime and dine at the upper-crust establishments in Westlake Center: They have a McDonald's and a Sbarro.

Soup and sandwich, horse and carriage – how 'bout wine and shopping? You may be able to have one without the other, but what a great combination. A wine shop/bar is a brilliant complement to a mall.

In the brown and pink women's loo at Purr Cocktail Lounge -- decorated a la Cupcake Royale - one hears all the expected sounds: the rustling of paper towels, tinkling in the next stall. But the bathroom also reveals a key metaphor of the pecking order at Purr: A quick under-the-stall shoe peek reveals that the blue Converse sneakers in the next stall are facing towards the toilet.
