Classing up the neighborhood, McLeod Residence Lounge opens to the public

The first draft of this piece was very negative. Originally I wasted the entire intro cutting into the Belltown club crowd: "They dress funny, they order crappy drinks, they eat babies." It was the usual barrage of lame insults, delivered against the usual invulnerable targets, to the usual negligible effect. If you're out there in your Ben Sherman shirt sucking down cocktails made with Red Bull, there's little I can say to dissuade you.

Teeth snap shut: The Crocodile Cafe closes

In the James Bond movie "Live and Let Die," Roger Moore's Bond is deliberately marooned on an island surrounded by dozens of hungry crocodiles. An Evil Henchman helpfully tells the spy how to disable a croc: "You just stick your hand in its mouth," he grins, "and pull its teeth out."

Music dies at renowned Crocodile

The Crocodile Cafe, a legendary Seattle rock club where many local up-and-comers played before launching into the national spotlight, has closed its doors, said Eli Anderson, the club's booking agent.

The Belltown venue, at Second Avenue and Blanchard Street, shut down abruptly this weekend after more than 15 years — apparently leaving behind a legacy that stretched from Nirvana to Death Cab for Cutie.

Anderson said he received the news in a voice mail from owner Stephanie Dorgan on Sunday.

A gray-hair parties with the black-clad around Belltown's Ace Hotel

It is a sometimes incongruous mixture of gray and black, Belltown at night.

And there I was, on my part of this assignment, sporting both colors — gray above the neck, black everywhere else.

I noticed lots of gray on the heads of diners, who stroll into the havens of overly designed foods and big bills — and nowhere else — that dot and surround this area north of downtown.
