Catch the pug bug

I've always kind of wondered about pug passion. As much as I am an equal opportunity dog lover, the bug-eyed, plate-faced pugs have never really captured my fancy. I say this with trepidation since I know they've pretty much cornered most-favored status among Seattle's canine bantam weights.

For my biscuits, the Seattle Kennel Club Dog Show (March 8 & 9) has way more to offer spectators than its bigger, flashier televised sister in New York.

It's 10 a.m. in New York, the Big Red Tennis Ball. Carefully coiffed and meticulously groomed purebred dogs are hitting their marks in the rings at Madison Square Garden. Handlers dressed for boardrooms are gnawing on dog treats (the best way to inspire eye contact, or at least eye-to-mouth contact, with your dog). Already, 10 lucky canines have clinched best of breed. By the end of the day, we'll have winners in the hound, terrier, nonsporting and herding groups.

The American Kennel Club's all-breed shows are just what they sound like: More than 3,000 dogs may be entered in a given show, and the range of breeds -- often upwards of 150 -- is impressive. The AKC's regional winter event also includes agility competition. Whether you're a serious breeder or have just seen "Best in Show" too many times, this veritable dogapalooza should be a delight.
