The Saturday Knights are out there to share beats and have some fun

The Saturday Knights are Seattle's premiere hip-hop party band. Add a little punk, soul and blues to the mix and you've got an explosively fun group.

The Seattle music press has been salivating over the group's new album, "Mingle," ever since advance copies began arriving last winter.

Never mind the weather -- summer still means sidewalk sales

Summer in Seattle means Seafair, neighborhood festivals and sidewalk sales. The nice weather brings people out of hibernation and shops spill out onto the sidewalk to entice buyers with deeply discounted merchandise. Below is a list of the major sidewalk sales happening in Seattle neighborhoods this summer.

My oh my: August 3 is Dave Niehaus Day

It may not be getting as much hype as Ken Griffey Jr.'s celebrated return last season or an Ichiro bobblehead giveaway in any season, but there's another celebration (and bobblehead) coming to Safeco Field later this summer that deserves your attention.

The boys are back in town: The Mariners' 2008 season begins Monday

In recent years, they've been the team we hate to love, a lineup flush with nice guys who make funny commercials but finish, if not last, then damn close.

But last year, the Mariners enjoyed their best season in four years and locked up Ichiro Suzuki through 2012, so there will be much to celebrate Monday when they kick off their new season in an afternoon matchup against the Texas Rangers.

Here's what we'll be cheering about:

Tasty grooves! Local cuisine and local music are served hot at Soundbite

I know you want to stare at the band with your hands in your pockets, unmoving. It's the Seattle way, passed down through the generations. Maybe three-odd decades ago, some guy wondered what it would be like to just stare at Hendrix as he played, and a Northwest tradition was born.

Dogs strut their stuff Mar. 8-9 at the Seattle Kennel Club Dog Show

For my biscuits, the Seattle Kennel Club Dog Show (March 8 & 9) has way more to offer spectators than its bigger, flashier televised sister in New York.

The Hives swarm the Showbox SoDo

Sweden's own garage-rock revivalists, the Hives are riding high following the release of last year's acclaimed "The Black and White Album." "Tick Tick Boom," the first single, has quickly become ubiquitous, the band's rowdy sound is attracting whole new waves of fans and the quintet still won't dress in anything but -- you guessed it -- black and white. Glad some groups still know how to stick to their roots.

Skillet Street Food is ready to roll again

Quick, call the Health Department! Skillet Street Food, Seattle's den of takeout iniquity, will roll again Jan. 16 after a string of health-code violations last fall forced a two-month hiatus.

Now, fresh from the Paris Hilton School of Public Relations, the bad boys of gourmet have parlayed their public embarrassment into brand new digs, lots of attention and a gig with the only thing on wheels that's naughtier than they are: the Rat City Rollergirls.
